This guide will help you locate and uninstall any retired Kolide software from our legacy Cloud product that may be still present on your device.

What Software is Retired?

Kolide officially retired its Cloud platform in Q4 of 2019. For customers using our Cloud product, they may have installed one or both of the following components:

  • The Kolide Cloud Launcher Agent (Windows, Linux, macOS)
  • The Kolide Cloud Desktop App (macOS only)

How do I check if I have Retired Software Running?

Automatic Detection

If you are a customer of K2, are using Kolide's Slack app, and have a device assigned to your Slack identity, you will receive a notice if our agent discovers the presence of Retired Kolide software running on your system.

This notice will provide you real-time status updates and point you to this article so you can successfully uninstall the Retired Software.

Manual Detection

Retired Software can also be found by looking for any running processes in the the following paths:

Launcher Agent:

  • /usr/local/kolide/  (macOS / Linux)
  • %SYSTEMDRIVE%\ProgramData\kolide\ (Windows)

Desktop Application:

  • /Applications/Kolide.app  (macOS Only)

Uninstalling Retired Software On macOS

Removing the Launcher Agent

First, launch Terminal.

Next,  remove the launcher by running the following commands, in order, in the terminal. (Please enter your password when prompted)

  1. sudo launchctl stop com.kolide.launcher
  2. sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.kolide.launcher.plist
  3. sudo rm -f /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.kolide.launcher.plist
  4. sudo rm -rf /usr/local/kolide
  5. sudo rm -rf /etc/kolide
  6. sudo rm -rf /var/kolide

If our automatic detection still shows the old launcher running, you may need to clean up any running processes by entering the following command in the terminal...

ps aux  |  grep -i /usr/local/kolide/  |  awk '{print $2}'  |  xargs sudo kill -9

Removing the Desktop App

The Kolide desktop app is no-longer needed (Kolide will use Slack to communicate your device's status). To remove the app follow these steps:

  1. Look for the Kolide Logo in your macOS menubar (near the Clock)
  2. If present, click it, click the gear in the windows that pops open, and select "Quit Kolide"
  3. Open The Finder (The happy face in the Dock)
  4. Open the "Applications" folder (can be found in the "Favorites" menu on the left-hand side)
  5. Locate Kolide and move it to the trash
